A Alemanha venceu o Uruguai por 3 a 2 e garantiu, pela quarta vez na sua história, a terceira colocação. O desempenho acabou repetindo o resultado do último Mundial, quando os tricampeões jogavam em casa. O jogo foi emocionante, teve duas viradas e cinco gols, mantendo a tradição dos jogos que definem a terceira colocação em uma Copa do Mundo.
O fato positivo para os que torcem pela manuntenção de Ronaldo como o maior goleador de todos os tempos de Copa foi a ausência de Klose. Com dores nas costas, o jogador assistiu ao jogo inteiro do banco de reservas e viu um time, muitas vezes, com pouca vontade de definir.

De dentro da pequena área ele fez o mais difícil: chutar para fora.
O segundo tempo começou da mesma forma. O parecia vida ou morte para os uruguaios era só mais um amistoso para a Alemanha. E por isso mesmo, com um dos gols mais bonitos da Copa, o Uruguai virou a partida. Arévalo recebeu pela direita e cruzou para a entrada da área. Forlán pegou de sem-pulo, de primeira. A bola ainda quicou na grama e morreu no fundo da rede de Butt aos 7 minutos da etapa final.
O Uruguai ainda comemorava a virada quando Muslera voltou a falhar. Boateng cruzou, e o goleiro saiu socando o ar, ainda dividindo a bola com dois de seus zagueiros. Jansen precisou dar um pequeno pulo para alcançar a bola e empatar a partida aos 12 minutos do segundo tempo. O autor do gol nem comemorou, apenas levantou os braços e voltou para seu campo para recomeçar o jogo.
A partir de então o jogo esfriou um pouco. Nenhuma das equipes criavam grandes chances de gol, e o jogo parecia caminhar para a prorrogação. Muita troca de passes no meio-campo e pouca ofensividade. Os torcedores já se preparavam para mais 30 minutos de emoção quando Khedira aproveitou grande falha de Lugano para garantir a vitória da Alemanha. De dentro da pequena área colocou no ângulo de Muslera de cabeça. Tabárez ainda tentou dar a última esperança aos torcedores uruguaios colocando El Loco Abreu, que pouco podia fazer. Forlán ainda bateu uma falta aos 47 minutos e a bola triscou na trave.
