A Itália perdeu por 3 a 2 para a Eslováquia, nesta quinta-feira, no estádio Ellis Park, e se tornou o quarto defensor de título a ser eliminado na primeira fase. Com a derrota, o time campeão em 2006 terminou na lanterna do grupo F da Copa do Mundo 2010 e repetiu o vexame que sofreu no Mundial de 1966, quando foi eliminado após uma derrota para a Coreia do Norte por 1 a 0, gol de Pak do-Ik, e deixou o torneio na primeira fase.

Foi a sexta vez que a Itália caiu na primeira fase. As outras foram em 1950, 54, 62, 66 e 74. O novo fiasco, no entanto, encontra mais semelhança na derrota de 1966 pela surpresa que sofreu. No primeiro tempo, a Eslováquia mostrava muitas dificuldades em sair jogando e seguidamente errava passes e devolvia a bola de graça para os italianos e avançaram bastante a marcação em relação a estreia, contra o Paraguai.
De Rossi saiu jogando errado, Kucka aproveitou a bobeira, tomou a bola e soltou para Vittek, que entrava entre os defensores. O atacante bateu seo, de primeira, para abrir o placar. O goleiro Marchetti se esticou todo, mas não foi capaz de impedir o segundo gol eslovaco na história das Copas. Ambos os tentos foram marcados pelo atacante Vittek, que defende o Ankaragücü, da Turquia.
Depois de abrir o placar, a Eslováquia cresceu no jogo, diminuiu o número de erros de passe e impediu a Itália de atacar. O primeiro tempo terminou com a Eslováquia atacando e bem próxima do segundo gol, enquanto que a Itália estava desnorteada e tocando sem saber como atacar.
Para a segunda etapa, Marcello Lippi partiu para o tudo ou nada. Tirou o volante Gattuso e colocou o atacante Quagliarella. Em seguida, tirou Montolivo e colocou Pirlo. As alterações pouco efeito surtiram e a Eslováquia permanecia, até os 20 minutos da segunda etapa, com mais chances de ampliar.
Pouco depois do vigésimo minuto, a Itália quase chegou ao empate. Quagliarella aproveitou o rebote de um escateio, bateu firme e viu Skterl salvar em cima da linha. Os italianos correram para cima do árbitro, que mandou o jogo seguir.
A Eslováquia aproveitou o descontrole emocional da Itália. O time dos Bálcãs teve três contra-ataques seguidos. Depois de desperdiçar dois, Vittek fez seu terceiro gol na Copa e se igualou a Higuaín, como artilheiro do mundial.
Depois do gol eslovaco, os jogadores italianos abandonaram a defesa e começaram a buscar o gol de qualquer maneira, até que ele chegou com Quagliarella. Em sgeuida, o árbitro Howard Webb anulou um gol da Itália.

A Eslováquia não se abateu com a pressão da seleção campeão do mundo e fez o terceiro gol. No lance seguinte, a Itália diminuiu. O jogo foi ate os 52 minutos do sgeundo tempo. Howard Webb apitou o final de jogo. De um lado, os italianos desabaram e do outro, Hamsik e sua turma comemoraram o feito.
