Parreira assume lugar de Joel no comando da África do Sul

O técnico brasileiro Carlos Alberto Parreira foi contratado para comandar a seleção da África do Sul na Copa do Mundo de 2010, retornando ao mesmo cargo que ocupou há 18 meses, anunciou a Federação Sul-Africana de Futebol nesta sexta-feira.
Parreira está a caminho de sua sexta Copa do Mundo como técnico ao substituir o também brasileiro Joel Santana, demitido na segunda-feira após uma sequência de oito derrotas nos últimos nove jogos.

Parreira, de 66 anos, dirigiu a seleção sul-africana pela primeira vez em 2006 para formar uma equipe competitiva para a Copa de 2010, mas renunciou ao posto em abril de 2008, após 21 partidas, quando sua esposa foi diagnosticada com câncer.
Após a saída, retornou ao Rio de Janeiro e indicou Santana ao cargo. Mas Santana teve pouco do carisma de seu compatriota e após 18 meses foi demitido após uma série de derrotas, a oito meses do início da Copa do Mundo.
O retorno de Parreira foi criticado por várias personalidades do futebol sul-africano, inclusive por ex-técnicos, que expressaram a preferência por um nome local para dirigir a equipe.
Mas a Federação Sul-Africana de Futebol afirmou ter iniciado conversas com Parreira sobre seu possível retorno antes da saída de Santana.
Parreira foi campeão mundial pelo Brasil em 1994 e também dirigiu a seleção brasileira em 2006. O técnico esteve também no comando do Kuweit, em 1982, dos Emirados Árabes Unidos, em 1990, e da Arábia Saudita, em 1998.
Os próximos jogos da África do Sul são contra o Japão, em casa, em 14 de novembro, e contra a Jamaica três dias depois.
Joel vinha sendo muito criticado por seus resultados e convocações. Depois de ver a pressão aumentar especialmente após a conquista apenas do quarto lugar na Copa das Confederações deste ano, em que os sul-africanos foram anfitriões, o treinador caiu com somente dez vitórias, três empates e 14 derrotas.
